Gas leak or loss of gas supply

Preparing for a gas outage, and what to do if there's a gas outage or a gas leak

If you smell gas or suspect a gas leak

If there is a gas leak, call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999 immediately.

If the leak is inside:

Don't do anything that could put you in more danger:

  • Don't turn any power or light switches on or off
  • Don't light any sort of flame - even if the gas leak is outside
  • Don't use any appliances that could cause a spark

Follow Cadent Gas' guidance on what to do if you smell gas.

How to prepare for a gas outage

Make a plan and get emergency supplies

Create a household emergency plan and prepare a grab-bag of essential supplies.

Let services know you need extra support

If you or a family member are vulnerable, check if you are eligible to sign up to your gas providers' Priority Services Register.

Signing up to a Priority Service Register (PSR) lets your supplier know that you need extra support. It will help them identify customers that have extra communication, access, or safety needs during a gas outage.

Contact your supplier or check if you are eligible on the Priority Services Register website.

Get your gas boiler serviced

Get your heating system serviced every year to keep it working safely and efficiently. Make sure it is serviced by a Gas Safe registered engineer.

Prepare a back-up heating source

Make sure you follow safety advice for using portable heaters from Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service.

What to do in a gas outage
