What to do in cold weather and snow
How you can keep yourself and others safe and warm during cold weather.

Travel safely
Snow, ice, heavy rain, and strong winds can all make travelling in winter more difficult.
If possible, avoid travelling in heavy snow and ice. If you do need to travel, follow advice to make sure you arrive safely:
Clear your path and driveway
Help prevent slips and falls by clearing snow and ice from your driveway, the pavement outside your home, or public spaces.
If you're clearing a public road or footpath, you can use grit from your local grit bin to do this. You can use Norfolk County Council's Winter Gritting map to find grit bins near you. They are shown as green triangles on the map.
If you want to clear snow and ice on your property, you can buy salt at any Norfolk Recycling Centre.
Problems with your gas, electricity, or water supply
Severe weather can disrupt essential services like gas, electricity, and water supplies. Pipes can also freeze in very cold weather.

Check on vulnerable members of your community
If it is safe to do so, check in with vulnerable family members and neighbours to make sure they are safe. Encourage them to stay warm with extra layers and blankets.
Staying warm and well in winter
Your health and wellbeing is important. Get advice to help you stay warm and well in cold weather.
Keeping warm
If possible, heat your home to 18C. If you're struggling with the increasing cost of energy, you may be eligible for financial support.
How to get help and advice with utility bills
When inside, wrap up with warm layers or a blanket. You could also use a hot water bottle or a heat bag.
Tips for keeping yourself warm from the British Red Cross
There are free, warm, welcoming spaces for the public in Norfolk. Search the Warm Welcome website to find a community hot-spot or warm space.
Cuppa Care buses offer a chance to meet up with others for a chat and a hot drink.
Take care using candles
We know heating and lighting your home is becoming increasingly expensive. If you choose to use candles, never leave them unattended.
- Always place candles in a proper holder
- Do not leave them in a draught or in front of curtains
- Keep them away from clothing, bedding, and other combustible materials
- Make sure they are out of the reach of children and pets
